FAQs
Here are some frequently asked questions, with answers!
How can I get the best from my candle?
There are 4 important factors to get the best from your candle.
- On the first burn the wax must melt to the edge to form your candle memory.
- Trim the wick to 5mm before each burn - this prolongs the life of your candle and ensures a clean burn.
- Avoid tunnelling by allowing the candle wax to melt to the edge (3-4 hours) on each burn.
- Do not burn for more than 4 hours at a time.
The first burn is the most important burn. You can find out more candle tips on our candle care page.
What is candle memory?
From the first burn, your candle remembers where it has burnt up to, and will only ever burn up to the point it was last extinguished. It's important to let your candle wax melt to the edge of the container on the first burn, and for all the other burns after.
My soy wax candle has a texture after the first use, is that normal?
Perfectly normal! Our candles are made from 100% soy wax and are a very natural product. If the soy wax cools at a different temperature after use (i.e. if your room is cool) it'll form some texture on the surface. This doesn't affect your candle use or fragrance. My top tip for minimal texture is that once the flame has been extinguished and smoke free, pop the lid back on. This will allow the candle to cool at a more even temperature, reducing the textured look.
Are your candles vegan?
Yes! All products from Shadow Candles are made with vegan ingredients, that are also environmentally friendly. Find out more about sustainability here.
How should I store my candle and wax melts?
Soy wax and fragrance oils are sensitive to both light and temperature. Store your candle in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Are your products safe to use around pets?
All our fragrances meet EU CLP safety regulations for use in Candles, Wax Melts and Reed Diffusers. All products have a label on the base listing potential allergens. You can also find out more on our CLP page.
We advise that you use our products with caution around pets and make sure your pets are free to leave the room if they choose to. If your pet has any known allergies or respiratory issues, or shows a change in behaviour, please consult your veterinarian clinic.
Speaking from experience with Shadow, he puts the Shadow in Shadow Candles, he has had no reaction to being in room with Reed Diffusers, Candles or Wax Melts. The rooms always have circulation and an open door if he chooses to move away. But as a true Golden Retriever he stays put and likes being comfortable.
I want to use my empty candle container; how can I clean it?
Hot soapy water is your best friend. Run your container under the hot tap and wash out with washing up liquid. If your candle has experienced some tunnelling and there is wax on the edge of the container you can pop your container in a saucepan on the stove and heat up the water slowly. This will allow the wax to melt away before you go in to clean with washing up liquid.
